About Barry Benson
Barry Benson is a true renaissance music man whose music career has spanned over 20 years. Music has been in his blood since he was 10 years old. The son of a jazz musician who played with the likes of The Jazz Crusaders and Ike & Tina Turner, Barry began his own musical career as a drummer and one of the first hip hop DJs on the West Coast. While in college, Barry ran one of the most prominent and early hip hop radio shows in the country at KUCR, exposing for the first time, such musical legends as Public Enemy and Outkast. In 1991, Source Magazine voted Mr. Benson’s radio show, one of the most influential radio shows in the country.
Experience In The Recording Industry
In 1991, Mr. Benson began his career as the Director of Radio Promotions for Walt Disney’s newly founded record label, Hollywood Records. Barry was instrumental in driving promotional campaigns for cutting edge hip hop luminaries such as Organized Konfusion, DJ Shadow, Peanut Butter Wolf, and the Digital Underground spin off, Raw Fusion. Three years later, Mr. Benson segued to A&M Records where he oversaw radio promotion for the likes of Mint Condition and Barry White.
In 1995, Mr. Benson would embark upon his most storied musical journey, as the Director of Rhino Records Urban Division. In this capacity, Mr. Benson created, produced, and marketed over 47 CD releases, over a nine year span. The platinum selling, “Smooth Groove” series, “Best of Keith Sweat”, and “The Best of Anita Baker”, are a few of the highlights of his career at Rhino Records. During his tenure with Rhino Records, Mr. Benson’s projects were responsible for sales of over 5 million units in sales.

The label was nominated for several Grammy Awards, NAARM Awards, and becoming the premiere catalog music label in the 1990s.
Online Experience In Today’s Changing Entertainment Landscape
Making the transition from the traditional record business to digital music was seamless for Mr. Benson, given his extensive experience. In 2003, Mr. Benson was at the ground floor of ringtone/mobile phone entertainment technology, working as a Director of Merchandising for InfoSpace Mobile.
Mr. Benson was then tapped to head Digital Marketing for Universal Music Group/Interscope/Geffen/A&M. As Head of Digital Marketing, Mr. Benson was instrumental in creating and executing digital campaigns with iTunes, AT&T, Verizon, and Yahoo, for such recording artists as 50 Cent, Common, Pussycat Dolls, and Nine Inch Nails.
In 2008, Barry launched his own digital music marketing company called Stratus Digital Music Marketing, based in Los Angeles, California. SDMM focuses on implementing online campaigns with recording artists. The stellar relationships that Barry has created with digital aggregators, online portals, and mobile phone companies have been the pillar of Stratus Digital Marketing’s success.
Mr. Benson’s “clientele” includes Hidden Beach Recordings, SMC Recordings, CodeBlack Entertainment, and iTunes. Clients have been impressed by the increase in digital sales based on the efforts of Stratus Digital Marketing.
Mr. Benson also oversees the Urban, Electronic, Jazz, and World Music, content and marketing strategy for the iTunes Essentials Store. He also hosts a weekly podcast, along with the iTunes music team, entitled “iTunes Weekly Rewind”. His latest endeavor includes online content creation and strategy for Vivendi/Universal, CodeBlack Entertainment.
Mr. Benson believes that, “There is so much compelling entertainment content that has yet to be monetized and marketed in the Web 2.0 environment”, he continues to say, “I feel that it is our goal at Stratus Digital Music Marketing to connect the dots between the traditional music marketing platforms and the digital musical marketing platforms, in the coming years”.
